Sushi Has Returned to Reading Terminal Market

With Umi Seafood and Sushi Bar, Yong Kim and Suzi Kim bring over 60 combined years of restaurant and seafood purveying experience to Reading Terminal Market.

There used to be a sushi bar at Reading Terminal Market. Tokyo Sushi Bar handled all Japanese fish-on-rice dealings at Philly’s eminent food hall. But it closed around four years ago, and then there was no more sushi — which is a tragedy for a place like RTM that rocks such an international roster.

So it’s very good news that Umi Seafood and Sushi Bar opened last week in the old 12th Street Cantina space at Avenue B and 9th Avenue.

Umi is the brainchild of two seafood experts: Yong Kim of B2 and the Bluefin restaurants on the Main Line, and Suzi Kim, who owns John Yi Fish Market at Reading Terminal, Ardmore Seafood at the Ardmore Farmer’s Market, and Under the C Seafood in the Comcast Center. Together, they’ll put up a menu of made-to-order sushi, sashimi and maki rolls (plus take-out boxes for those on the go), plus a selection of prepared seafood dishes like crab cakes and lobster mac and cheese.
