Weckerley’s Ice Cream Is Opening A Shop In Fishtown
And they’re doing it soon–like this Friday soon. Because you know that old bit of business wisdom: If you’re looking at opening an ice cream shop, December is the best possible month…
But hey, who are we to judge, right? For starters, Jen and Andy Satinsky started up their “micro-creamery” four years ago in the kitchen of the Green Line Cafe in West Philly and took their time before moving on to their first, real shop in a small space at 9 West Girard Avenue. Also, Weckerley’s ice cream is good. All small-batch, all hand-made, made with local cream and eggs and seasonal ingredients. It’s not damn-it’s-hot ice cream–the kind that you eat just because you need to keep yourself from melting in the summer. It’s I-really-want-ice-cream ice cream–the stuff you treat yourself to when you want something special.
The grand opening is happening on Friday, December 9. They’re opening the doors at 4pm and, in addition to the ice cream, they’ll be offering snacks and drinks–like beer from St. Benjamin and cheese from Birchrun Hills and Valley Milkhouse.
After that? They’ll be scooping seven days a week, from noon to 9pm on weekdays and until 10pm on the weekends. Obviously, the menu of ice cream, sorbets, ice cream sandwiches and other desserts will be an ever-changing kind of thing, but we do know that they’re looking at opening with cups and homemade cones of flavors like whole-bean vanilla, hot chocolate (chipotle-cinnamon spiced chocolate with swirls of handmade toasted marshmallow fluff), Jim’s Secret Stash (with fennel from Philadelphia’s Heritage Farm and a salted licorice swirl), Lemongrass Cherry (which I want to try right now), apple cider sorbet and Peanut Butter Populi, which they describe as “a crowd-sourced flavor made of peanut butter ice cream with chocolate and peanut butter honeycomb candy.”
They’re also going to have some of their handmade ice cream sandwiches available, including Black and White, Crème Fraîche Cranberry and Baglr’s Rhapsody, “a collaboration with new neighbor Philly Style Bagels, featuring layers of cream cheese ice cream and bagel ice cream sandwiched between an IPA cookie with toasted sesame, fennel seed and sea salt.”
So yeah, not your average ice cream sandwich is what they’re saying.
