Bizarre Early Morning Hit-and-Run Lands Two Police Officers in the Hospital

A confounding chain of events unfolded last night on the 700 block of North Broad Street, causing two police officers to be hospitalized. Police are still trying to put together exactly what took place around 2 a.m. this morning — and why.

At 2:16 a.m., two undercover officers in an unmarked car were traveling southbound on Broad Street when a black vehicle, which was driving eastbound from Brown Street, crashed into the passenger side of the officers’ vehicle and then left the scene. The black sedan fled southbound on Broad Street. The officers were wearing plain clothes and not in uniform at the time of the crash, according to CBS3.

The police car was a grey “2008 unmarked Ford Ranger truck,” according to police spokeswoman Tanya Little.

Both officers were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment, but are in stable condition. The officer who was operating the car suffered a head injury, while the passenger sustained shoulder and hip injuries. However, both are expected to be treated and released.

After the initial crash, another vehicle — a white SUV — approached the scene of the accident. The driver got out of the vehicle, leaving the engine running and the car in drive.

As the 33-year-old driver of that white car left the scene, two other men — who were not involved in the original crash — got into the moving vehicle and drove away, police told 6ABC. The car took off heading south on Broad Street, hit a moving car head-on, and finally slammed into a parked car.

Police are now looking for three suspects in connection with the two separate crashes.
