Final US Airways Flight Departs Philly

One of the most popular airlines for domestic travel in the United States is taking one final flight across the country before retiring the US Airways name for good following a merger with American Airlines.

US Airways Flight 1939 departed the Philadelphia International Airport Friday morning en route to Charlotte, Phoenix and San Francisco. It returns with a San Francisco to Philadelphia red-eye flight on Saturday.

American will begin operating as one airline for all customers starting with flights after 12:01 a.m. on Saturday. The US Airways reservation system will go dark.

The flight is numbered 1939 to pay homage to the year US Airways’ predecessor company All-American Aviation began operating.

The merger between US Airways and American was confirmed in February 2013 and American said it’s committed to keeping Philadelphia as a hub for the airline.

It’s been quite a ride for the air travel industry, which has seen its share of mergers in recent years: Southwest-AirTran (2011), United-Continental (2010), Delta-Northwest (2008), US Airways-America West (2005).

Now four airlines: Delta, Southwest, United and American have 80 percent of the domestic travel marketshare.

• 10:05 a.m. EDT – Depart PHL
• 12:04 p.m. EDT – Arrive CLT | 2:35 p.m. EDT – Depart CLT
• 4:01 p.m. MST – Arrive PHX | 5:10 p.m. MST – Depart PHX
• 7:12 p.m. PDT – Arrive SFO | 9:55 p.m. PDT – Depart SFO
• 6:18 a.m. EDT – Arrive PHL (Oct. 17)
