These Entrepreneurs Just Won $80,000

Kale, an app to help diabetes patients.

Tackling diabetes takes serious work. Simply monitoring blood sugar is just the beginning. So the folks at Benecure created Kale, a two-pronged system offering a patient-management portal for caregivers and an app for patients.

The Chicago-based company just won first prize in the PACT Healthcare App Challenge, taking home $30,000 in prize money. PACT (an affiliate of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce) gave out a total of $80,000 to four companies on Monday.

Kale’s patient-management portal allows a case manager to see what portions of diabetes care patients are struggling with (diet planning, side effects etc.) and shows any other diseases they may be suffering from. Its patient-facing app gives users the ability to input food intake and monitor a wide variety of symptoms.

Earning second place — and $10,000 — was iDiabetes, an app made by iHealth Innovations of Parsippany, N.J. It provides a slew of different services from the delivery of nutrition facts to health tips from other diabetics.

The other contest was the PACT Wayfinding App Challenge. The first-prize winner, taking home $30,000, was @UPenn Xperience — which lets users discover art, culture and history on Penn’s campus via a mobile app.

In second place, taking home $10,000, was Time Machine Walking Tours an app that displays historical photos from your exact location.
