Main Line Monday: This Villanova Residence Would Have Been Perfect for the Mad Men Finale

Don and the rest of the former Sterling-Cooper gang may have moved onto the next chapter in their lives with last night’s finale, but that doesn’t mean we’ve completely let them go. Case in point, this classic mid-century modern abode in Radnor Township, which although built in 1946, gives off a certain late sixties vibe that has us feeling like an alternate story arch with Don and Betty reuniting in Montco is about to take place. (Okay, so it’s not exactly possible, but Birdie is from the area, remember?)
You can take a look at the setting of our fan-fiction in the gallery below, but here’s some background info on the light-filled Main Line home: it was designed by architect Jack Grisdale (real name John Thomas Grisdale) who is said to have done a stint studying architecture at the University of Pennsylvania before dropping out. Grisdale, like Mad Men’s Dick Whitman, appears to have had a knack for his particular field and, despite leaving school, went on to work for various firms, one of the most successful of which he was partner: Carroll, Grisdale & Van Alen.
For this house, which he built for his family, Grisdale featured walls of windows, open spaces, and made sure the home had a strong connection to the one-acre flat grounds with the floor-to-ceiling exposures. Two of the first level rooms are exemplary in this regard as they have high ceilings and can be “used for adaptive functions such as an office” or family room.
…Wait, instead of imagining Don and Betty reuniting here, what if the entire show had been set in the area? You know, Don working at N. W. Ayer & Son in Philadelphia, Betty and the kids living on the Main Line, and the rest of the cast scattered throughout Fairmount, East Passyunk, Cedar Park, etc. On second thought…we might have gotten something like this for an ending.
