Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby Sets Date for 10th Anniversary Run
New Kensington Community Development Corporation and the East Kensington Neighbors Association have released date details about their 2015 Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby & Arts Festival, which turns 10 this year with a fresh logo and a couple new developments.
The beloved parade of human-powered sculptural thingies will take place on Saturday, May 16th from noon to 6 pm. It’s happening in conjunction with the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival, hence the new name, and Philly graphic-design studio J2 Design is celebrating all the newness by creating a new logo. The design (right), say creators, mimics the event’s “playful, gritty vibrancy.”
Philadelphia Brewing Company is also lending support to the Derby & Arts Festival by hosting a citywide series of arts and fabrication workshops prior to the Derby. According to a release sent out today, the workshops, held every weekend between March 14th and April 18th, “are designed for both the curious beginners and enthusiastic experts to learn techniques from rhinestoning crazy costumes to welding together Frankensteined salvage bike parts and everything in-between.”
The workshops are taking place in a variety of creative spaces throughout Philly, like Philadelphia Sculptural Gym, Art/Assembly, and NextFab. Each gathering will culminate with an after-party featuring suds from Philly Brewing Co.
