Green Tea May Help Weight Loss, Study Says: 5 Ways to Sneak It Into Your Diet
If you’ve never been a big fan of green tea, that’s all about to change: A new study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition Food Research shows that drinking green tea every day, combined with steady exercise, could be the key to shedding that winter weight.
Here’s how the study worked: Mice were divided into three groups. The first group received green tea extract (the human equivalent of eight to 10 cups per day) and exercised regularly. The second group received green tea extract but did not exercise and the third group exercised but did not receive green tea extract.
The mice who exercised and received green tea extract experienced a 27 percent reduction in body mass and a 36 percent reduction in abdominal fat while the two other groups experienced significantly less significant changes in weight and health measurements.
If you’re thinking, “But they’re mice,” don’t worry: As lead researcher Joshua Lambert explains, the study is still relevant to humans: “I think we can make that leap. When we put together our animal model experiments, we try to mimic the human situation as much as possible.”
