New Jersey Marathon to Donate $10K for Post-Sandy Shore Restoration
If you hadn’t thought about signing up for the New Jersey Marathon on May 5th (you know, assuming you don’t get selected in the Broad Street Run lottery to run that race on the same day), you might want to consider it. Officials at US Road Sports & Entertainment, which puts on the race, just announced they will donate at least $10,000 from race registrations to Hurricane Sandy restoration projects as part of their “Restore the Shore” campaign. They’ll also steer funds from three of their other races to the effort and to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. Those races include the Palm Beaches Marathon, which just took place on December 2nd; the Miami Marathon on January 27th; and the 13.1 New York Marathon, held in Queens on March 23rd.
As Runner’s World reports, the New Jersey Marathon runs through eight towns that were severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy, from Monmouth Beach down to Ocean Grove. Organizers have pledged to give $20 for every marathon participant and $10 for every half-marathoner to relief and recovery efforts.
On the heels of new reports saying it could take a decade to rebuild the Jersey Shore, this is certainly welcome news.
