Homegrown: Taking Flight

Bright, sturdy, youthful, Philly-made TRKFLD (stands for “track and field”) bags seem to be everywhere. Find them in the window of Old City’s Deep Sleep. And shelved near high-performance trainers at Philadelphia Runner. And displayed like art objects alongside the latest Nike reissues at Ubiq. Impressive for a five-month-old moonlight business dreamed up by 31-year-old sneaker marketer Bryan Poerner and 28-year-old Penn language teacher Thi Vuong during a trip to Hong Kong. For their first line, the couple chose water-and-faderesistant Sunbrella fabric in summery stripes and grass greens, and shapes boxy to groovy. One model is meant to tote LPs (perfect for Philly’s DJs and wannabes). The round “Mi” is adorable for its just-clever-enough edge (or lack thereof). And the Bob Dupione Paradise flight bag (shown) actually makes time spent waiting on Philly’s runways — believe it — bearable.

Available for $60-$180 at Deep Sleep, 54 North 3rd Street, 215-351-9124; trkfld.com.
