The Mix: Trend

First, a knitting craze spawned stitching-and-bitching. Now, sewing is the new micro-trend in the handmade = cool movement. Thankfully, the revival is all about chic fun. Here, three local stops at which to dust off your old Singer or brush up on straight stitches. And, of course, bitch.

Fabrics like organic cotton fleece are fresh, and instructional books sew the way to chic purses, totes and home accessories. A fabric boutique so cheery, you’ll be convinced that whipping up an A-line skirt will be an effortless joy. Quilters queue for hundreds of fabric choices, while budding seamstresses score ribbons and trendy clothing patterns. Philadelphia Sewing Collective
Classes are taught by seamstresses and fashion designers, who give you the know-how to do your own alterations or make a top by recycling vintage scarves.
