Homegrown: Goodie Bag

It’s hard to do much of anything these days without encountering a self-congratulatory attempt to go green. Whole Foods bans plastic bags! Ikea does, too! But Noel Cianci, a Philadelphia photographer and celebrity stylist (Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson, Sting), has been eco-fabulous for quite some time. Her Gypsystyle line of featherweight, water-resistant totes — like this new playfully striped beach bag — was born of a years-ago trip abroad. “I was shooting in India, and found people there naturally made use of discarded things: plastics, wrappers, flip-flops.” Her bags’ fun fabric is woven out of recycled plastics from sources like soda bottles. She sees this, and all of her designs — we’re addicted to the overnight carryall and the yoga sling — as an easy, affordable way to make a difference. “I’d like to make people become a bit more conscious about the small choices they make every day,” she says. And a bit more stylish in the process.
