Temple Has a Great Shot at Being “Crappy UConn” This Year

The Temple men's and women's basketball teams keep advancing in the NIT, the main tournament for schools that didn't make the NCAAs. Go Owls!

Last night, Feyonda Fitzgerald hit a bank shot with a half-second left in overtime to put Temple past N.C. State, 80-79, in the Women’s NIT. The Owls are now in the quarterfinals.

Coincidentally, Temple’s men’s team is in the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament, the top postseason tourney for teams that didn’t make the NCAA tournament.

Last year, the University of Connecticut won both the men’s and women’s NCAA tourneys. You know what’s coming: Temple has a great shot to win both the men’s and women’s NIT this year, which would make them a shitty UConn.

Temple’s men’s team was screwed out of the NCAA tournament, but they got a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Owls won their region; they escaped against Bucknell in the first round before ripping George Washington and Louisiana Tech in their next two games. They play Miami in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

The women’s team is now in the quarterfinals after beating Marist, Penn and N.C. State. There’s a chance they could play Villanova in the semifinals. (It’s a Philly-heavy women’s NIT this year.)

Temple may not ever be as good as UConn is at sports, but they can be a B-list version of it this season. Go Owls!
