Hallelujah! Charges Against Philly Jesus Dropped

Philly Jesus — legally known as Michael Grant — was arrested in November and charged with disorderly conduct. The DA has declined to prosecute.

The Philadelphia district attorney has dropped the charges against Philly Jesus. Just weeks before his namesake’s birthday!

Philly Jesus — who does not believe he is actually Jesus — was arrested last month and charged with disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. “The DA’s decision reaffirms our contention all along,” Philly Jesus’ lawyer, Charles Gibbs, said in a statement. “Philly Jesus’ arrest for pre-textual charges was without merit.”

Philly Jesus was in court Wednesday for the charges. Per the Daily News, PJ had to check his staff at the courthouse, but was able to keep “his leather man bag.” He pleaded not guilty.

Back when he was Michael Grant, the future Philly Jesus was arrested more than a dozen times between 2005 and 2013. After getting clean, he decided to dress as Jesus. He usually hangs out around LOVE Park.

“The overwhelming support that Philly Jesus has received locally, nationally and internationally is due in large part to the captivating story that Philly Jesus represents,” Gibbs statement continued. “A young man who has overcome his own personal demons and now is devoted to talking to anyone and everyone about Jesus posited against a government actor who decided to enforce his will instead of the law.”

Gibbs said his law firm, The Green Firm, is “vigorously investigating” Philly Jesus’ arrest.
