The top floor of a Margate beach house gets an extreme kid makeover

Who needs fairy godparents when you’ve got fairy-tale-worthy grandparents? To turn the third floor of their 1930s Ventnor Avenue summer home into a sleepover paradise for their grandchildren — all boys under five — Judi and Arthur Lerner hired up-and-coming Mount Airy interior designer JJ Fox. Her challenge: Transform two guest rooms and a bathroom into a seamless, stimulating kid-space. Her solution included sunshine-yellow bunk beds, secret hiding spots, race-car decals, and a room-spanning map of the world. “We weren’t worried about longevity,” says Judi, “My motto is, ‘Everything changes.’ So we just went for it.” The resulting down-the-shore kiddie digs prove grandparent rule number one: Grandchildren were meant to be spoiled.
