6 Fit Things to Do in Philly This Weekend
Don’t while away your weekend by sitting around in front of a Netflix marathon. Get out and sweat a little (or a lot!) with our fun fitness picks.
1. Mudras & Mimosas on the Moshulu
When: Every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Where: The Moshulu, 401 South Christopher Columbus Boulevard, Philly.
Did you know there’s a yoga class every Sunday morning on the floating Moshulu ship parked on the Delaware Riverfront? Us, either. Here’s how it works: Instructor Liz Rule leads a one-hour long Vinyasa class in the enclosed space at the top of the ship. The class costs $5 and participants are invited to stay for a $25 brunch buffet ($10 off the normal price) that includes pastries, French toast, scrambles, a raw bar and, of course, mimosas.
2. Mountain Biking in the Wissahickon
When: Sunday, January 18th from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Where: Meet at Cadence Cycling, 4323 Main Street, Manayunk.
Another every-Sunday event to add to your calendar. Join a group from Cadence Cycling for a free mountain bike trek in the Wissahickon. If you don’t have a bike of you’re own, you’re welcome to borrow a demo bike from the shop—for free. Just call in advance to arrange it (215-508-4300). Keep tabs on the store’s Facebook page for weather-related changes or cancelations.
3. Free Yoga for Runners
When: Sunday, January 18th from 11 a.m. to noon.
Where: Philadelphia Runner, 571 Glen Eagle Square, Glen Mills.
Philadelphia Runner’s Glen Mills store is opening early on Sunday for a free hourlong yoga class geared toward runners. Poses will help you stretch out your legs and develop strength in underused muscles. Bring your own mat.
4. Free Candlelight Hot Flow Yoga
When: Sunday, January 18th from 6 to 7 p.m.
Where: Beautiful Mind Strong Body Center, 330 Kennett Pike, suite 107, Chadds Ford.
Candles and yoga on a Sunday evening—does it get any better? This is hot yoga class is set to soft music to help you focus and get centered for the week ahead.
5. Dhyana Yoga Seva Center Workshop
When: Saturday, January 17th 12:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Where: Dhyana Yoga Seva Center, 20th and Spring Garden, Fairmount.
Dhyana Yoga’s teachers-in-training are hosting an all-day yoga and meditation event this weekend. There will be a beginner’s Vinyasa flow class from 12:30 to 1:45, followed by guided meditation from 2 to 2:45. An all-levels Vinyasa flow class will kick off at 3 and run until 4:15. The day will end with food and a raffle drawing. It’s $10 for yoga and meditation classes, or $5 for meditation only. Proceeds will be donated to the Transformation Yoga Project, a nonprofit that teaches yoga and mindfulness as a tool for personal change in the lives of people within drug and alcohol rehabilitation institutions, the criminal justice system, veterans within the VA hospital system.
6. Chester County 5K Winter Series
When: Sunday, January 18th at 9 a.m.
Where: Downington West High School, 445 Manor Avenue, Downingtown.
This is the first in a series of three timed races, where you can test your training throughout the winter. The race takes place on the grounds of Downingtown West, Stem and Middle School campuses. Organizers say it’s an extremely fast course and easy to PR. It’s $15 for one race or $30 for all three. Race day registration begins at 8 a.m.
