Web Original: Top 5 Shops for Men’s and Women’s Clothes

A round-up of the top 5 shops for men's and women's clothes in the Philadelphia area.

Hi! I’m Emily Gagne (well, Goulet, really — I am newly married and still in the process of figuring out how to change my name), a lifestyle editor here at Philly Mag, and, starting today, I’ll be dishing out my Top 5 lists of everything in and around Philly — from the best sale racks in the city, to the greatest spots to score hostess gifts, to the most relaxing facials around, and more. I’m hoping that they’ll serve as a resource to shopping in Philadelphia for anything you need or want.

Curious about a specific Top 5 topic? Send me an email at egagne@phillymag.com, let me know what you’re looking for, and I’ll scour the city/’burbs and give you my picks. Check back every Monday for my new Top 5 list.

Top 5 Shops for Men’s and Women’s Clothes

Now that I’m married, fresh from the honeymoon, still happy to spend every waking moment together, I want my brand-new hubby to come shopping with me! (Which, come to think of it, might quickly end said bliss …)

Anyway.

I don’t want him standing over my shoulder the whole time, so I’ve come to regard stores stacked with women’s and men’s selections as a heaven-sent solution: They allow us to shop together, yet alone. Then, when we’re finished, we can leave the store holding our bags — and holding hands. Perfect.

1. South Moon Under
You can score flirty frocks (T-Bags, Ella Moss, Ali Ro) and other seasonal wardrobe staples (Splendid tees, designer denim, Hobo International bags), while he can find softest-ever James Perse tees, a large selection of denim, comfy North Face fleeces, Hugo Boss button-downs, polos and accessories.

2. Love Illuminati
While you pick your way through vintage merch and clothes by the coolest up-and-coming designers, your guy can peruse racks full of half-hipster, half-classic duds (Brown Sound hoodies, Plaster button-downs, retro shades, and Modern Amusement tees). Did I mention they won Best of Philly for Men’s Casual Wear?

3. Omoi
You’ll both love this boutique for its edgy Japanese streetwear. Gals — make a beeline for the colorful tops by Keinice. Guys, sift through the tees by WeSC and Ghostly International. My advice? Pick up a sleek Nooka watch for an accessory you both can enjoy — just prepare to battle it out over who gets to wear it when.

4. Urban Outfitters
Let him try on Varvatos henleys, Converse and Nike kicks, Diesel jackets, and Lee and True Religion denim, while you scoop up Charlotte Ronson sweaters, Free People tops, and funky-fab accessories. Meet up in the home section and shop — together — for furnishings for your love nest. The Center City store has a new layout … more room for more goods.

5. Matthew Izzo

Recent trips have proven that the home accessories are less and less at Izzo these days, but the back of the store still has a solid collection super-skinny Cheap Monday pants and Filippa K dresses while he checks out J. Lindeberg sweaters, Nice Collective hoodies and–because we all need basics — Nudie Jeans Co. boxer-briefs.
